The Best Bedroom Storage and Dressers
There is one thing to get right with a dresser before style, size or price, and it is that a loaded chest of drawers is heavy enough to hurt someone if it comes forward.
Most furniture guidance is about how things look. This one starts somewhere else, because a chest of drawers is one of the few pieces in a house that can actually injure someone.
Anchor it to the wall. Every time.
A loaded dresser with its top drawers open is dangerously front-heavy, and a child climbing an open drawer is the classic way one comes down. Furniture tip-over is a well-documented hazard and it is almost entirely preventable.
So:

- Wooden runners are traditional and fine on solid-wood furniture, though they stick in humid weather.
- Fabric bins on a frame are not drawers at all. They are light, cheap and genuinely useful in a closet or a rental — but they will not take the weight of a full drawer of jeans, and nobody should expect them to.
Check whether the listing says “metal drawer slides”. If it says nothing at all about the runners, that silence is usually the answer.
Depth, and the door you forgot about
Most dressers are 16 to 20 inches deep, and the drawers need that much again in front to open fully.
Measure the gap between where the dresser goes and whatever is opposite — usually the bed or a door swing. A dresser that fits against the wall but cannot open its drawers is a mistake people genuinely make.
Narrow-depth options around 14 inches exist and are worth seeking out for tight rooms, at the cost of shallower drawers.
Height and what goes on top
Around 30 to 36 inches is standard, which puts the top at a comfortable working height and makes it usable as a surface — for a lamp, a tray, or a television.
If a television is going on it, check the top’s weight rating, which good listings publish and poor ones don’t.
